Flock of birds



Recently I’ve come across some collective nouns for birds. We’ve all heard of a murmuration of starlings but what about these

an exultation of Skylarks

a charm of Goldfinches 

a clattering of Jackdaws, and (best of all)

a blush of Robbins

Mental Health First Aid, what is it and why is it important?

This week I attended an excellent two day training course on mental health first aid and as a result I am recognised by Mental Health First Aid England  ("MHFA England") as qualified to give mental health first aid. The training was delivered by Brendan at Mood Mental Health Training  and I can whole heartedly recommend it. What is poor mental health? MHFA England include the following conditions in its definition of poor mental health; anxiety, depression, and psychosis . There are obviously many different ways these conditions manifest themselves including eating disorders, self harm, hallucinations, delusions, and suicidal thoughts. 75th Anniversary of Peak District - a celebratory tax?

2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the Peak District. In his Guardian Country Diary from Burbage on 14 June 2025 Ed Douglas worries that access to the Peak District may not remain free in its 76th year and beyond. The BBC has reported that there are suggestions that a visitors tax should be paid by those who enjoy the Peak Park. The justification for this is that the costs of maintaining and running the oldest National Park in the UK are escalating because of funding cuts and increased incidents of dangerous parking and wild fires.  Open Gates Outdoors, initial views on this are that of course access should be free to a national park.  However could an argument be made for a progressive taxation on use of the Peak Park being used to raise funds from the largely wealthy demographic that use the Peak District and funds raised used to improve access to the Peak District by isolated and vulnerable groups?  This would be very much in line with Objective 8 of the Peak Distric...

River Don Project

This week I was lucky enough to be at a presentation given by the River Don Project (www.the riverdon.org.uk). It changed the way I look at my environment and also the benefits that can come from the work of Open Gates Outdoors.  The presentation was given by Alban Krashi and Jonny Douglas of Opus Independents (www.weareopus.org.uk) an organisation that promotes system change in order to help tackle the most fundamental challenges facing the human race. It does this by encouraging us to view the world we live in and the systems that affect it from a completely different perspective..  The ultimate aim of the River Don Project is to achieve separate legal status for the River Don so its rights are protected in law. This may sound far fetched but it has been achieved in many parts of the world including  Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, India, New Zealand and even the United States.
